Becoming Director of Research

Junior and senior permanent researchers can become research directors (DR). There are 3 levels of DR: 2nd class, 1st class and outstanding class. DR2 competitions generally start in January.

Research directors are recruited through competitions based on qualifications and scientific work. The positions are allocated according to groups of scientific disciplines governed by Inserm's seven Specialized Scientific Commissions (CSS - in french) and the Research Steering and Support Commission (CPAR - in french).

Required qualifications for application. Four scenarios:

1- Applicants CR Inserm with 3 years of experience (probationary period included)

2- Applicants CR Inserm with less than 3 years of experience

If you have significant contribution, you can apply: equivalent contribution may realised by scientific advisory board.

3- Applicants non-CR Inserm with at least 8 years of experience

"Years of experience in research" means years spent in a public scientific and technological organization or in a research or teaching laboratory of a public research body.

4 - Applicants non-CR Inserm with less than 8 years of experience

"Years of experience in research" means years spent in a public scientific and technological organization or in a research or teaching laboratory of a public research body. If an applicant has realised research in another public or private laboratory, the equivalent experience in research may however be recognized by the relevant Inserm assessment committee.

Job profile

Mission

  • Define, organize, animate and promote scientific activity of an innovative research program carried by staffs under their responsibility.
  • Develop scientific projects to produce, exploit and disseminate knowledge within the framework of Inserm's missions and values, which are based on responsible conduct of research and ethical and regulatory requirements.

Main activities

  • Define the axes and priorities of the research programme
  • Manage and animate a research program
  • Training of PhD students, promote young researchers
  • Research and ensure funding required for the realization of projects
  • Ensure the validation of results and scientific integrity
  • Disseminate and promote its results in the form of publications, communications at national and international conferences, and/or patents
  • Develop, participate and/or coordinate research collaborations at the national and international level
  • Produce the assessments of the support staff under their responsibility, assist in competition preparation and career monitoring

  • Monitor the management of research funding contracts
  • Participate in university education at national or international level
  • To be a member of evaluation committees (academic and/or private)
  • Participate in the evaluation of scientific activities (manuscripts, funding requests)
